Coffee subscriptions: who they're actually for

We sell a coffee subscription, so take this with the obvious grain of salt, but here's the honest math on when a subscription beats buying bags.

Dana K., head roaster December 9, 2025 5 min read

Subscriptions are everywhere now, coffee, dog food, soap, and the pitch is always convenience plus discovery. Half of that pitch is true for coffee. The convenience is real; whether the discovery is a feature depends entirely on who's picking your beans.

Ours works like this: two bags a month, roaster's pick, $38 with shipping across Canada. Pausing is one email. That structure works great for some people and badly for others, and the difference is predictable.

The math

A two-cup-a-day household goes through roughly one 340 g bag every ten days. Two bags a month is almost exactly that pace, which is why we sized it that way instead of the 'four bags!!!' plans that turn into shelf clutter.

On cost: the subscription saves about $6 a month versus buying the same bags in-store plus shipping. Not life-changing. The real saving is the emergency grocery-store beans you never have to buy again, that's worth more than the discount.

A subscription should make coffee show up before you notice you're out, that's the entire job.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you already know exactly what you like, a subscription's point is rotation, and forcing variety on a person who wants the same Colombia every month is a bad deal for both of us. Buy the bag directly; the beans page lists what's on.

Skip it too if your consumption is erratic. Coffee's freshness window is about five weeks; a backlog of bags is worse than a gap. The subscription wins when your habit is steady, two cups a day, every day, no exceptions. That person exists in enormous numbers, and they're who we built it for.

Sub or no sub

  • Steady drinker? Subscription wins
  • Two bags = ~20 days at 2 cups/day
  • Rotating lots = forced discovery
  • Erratic habits? Buy bags instead

Try a month, judge it

One month in, you'll know, either the box landing before you ran out was the point, or you didn't notice and bags are your answer. Start or skip at the beans page; cancel by email whenever, no form to fight.

Subscription questions

Roaster's pick by default, it's how we keep the rotation fresh. Tell us your preference (espresso-friendly, filter, decaf) and we stick to it; full custom orders are better as one-off bags.

First Monday of the month, roasted that same Friday. Calgary arrives in a day or two, the rest of Canada in about four.

Email happydealsclub@gmail.com before the 25th, done. The refund page has the boring version if you want the rules in writing.
