A local's coffee walk through Bridgeland

Our own coffee crawl through Bridgeland, from our door on Freeport Boulevard to the bridge and back, with the honest stops we'd send a friend to.

Calgary doesn't get credit for its coffee scene, the assumption is oil country, chain cafés, drive-throughs. Bridgeland disagrees. Within a fifteen-minute walk of our door you can trace the neighbourhood's whole character in cups.

This route is the one we actually do on slow Sundays, and yes, it starts at our own bar, because it would be weird to pretend otherwise. Nobody's paying for a mention here; these are the spots our crew drinks at when we're off shift.

The route

Start: us. 123 Freeport Blvd NE, an espresso or the batch filter, depending on how serious the morning is. If it's a Tuesday, the roaster might be running, which settles the order for you.

Stop two: the bakery two blocks over. Cardamom buns, obviously, the same ones we sell at the counter. Getting them at the source means they're an hour fresher and the argument about which one of you gets the last one happens there instead.

Stop three: down to the bridge. Walk the coffee toward the river. The pedestrian bridge gives you the skyline, it's the photo everyone takes and nobody regrets.

Stop four: the bench. The overlook past the bridge on the north side. Bring the second coffee here. In summer it goes fast; in winter you get the view to yourself plus the smugness.

Calgary coffee is underrated the same way Calgary winters are overstated, both opinions change after one visit.

What to order where

Our rule for any café: ask what they're proud of. If the barista lights up about a single origin, order that; if they point at the house blend, that's the answer too. On our own bar, the rotating single-origin espresso is the pick, it changes weekly and the baristas have opinions.

If the walk turns you into a home brewer, grab beans for the morning after, the roasted-this-week bags are at the counter. And the full crawl in map form is on our contacts page if you're navigating by phone.

The walk, compressed

  • Start at the roastery, 123 Freeport Blvd NE
  • Bakery buns, two blocks over
  • Bridge to the skyline view
  • Best bench: north overlook, past the bridge

Walk it, then argue with us

Every local has a different version of this route, come tell us yours at the bar. If yours is better we'll update the list, and if it's the same we'll buy your filter.

Walk questions

Forty-five minutes with stops, twenty without. Add twenty more if the bench is free, it usually isn't on weekends.

Chinooks clear the sky for days at a time, pick a warm spell and the walk is better than summer because nobody else thought of it.

Informally, ask at the bar on a quiet afternoon and someone on break might walk with you. Formally, the cupping sessions scratch the same itch.
